The art of crafting and performing on the rubab has been added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.

From December 2 to December 7, 2024, the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO will take place in Asunción, Paraguay.

The Committee's resolution highlights that the rubab is one of the oldest musical instruments in Central, South, and Southwest Asia.

It emphasizes that the rubab serves as a unifying factor for the peoples of the Central Asian region. It contributes to cultural and social cohesion and plays a significant role in the development of cultural exchanges and solidarity.

It is welcomed that this art also contributes to quality education, gender equality, and inclusive economic and sustainable development.

The Committee also highly appreciates the practical measures being implemented and planned in the initiating countries for the preservation, promotion, and further popularization of the art of rubab making and playing on both national and international scales.

“The art of rubab making and playing” has become the 16th element of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity included in UNESCO's Representative List at the initiative of Uzbekistan.
